Practical application of bacteriophages
Bacteriophages (Ancient Greek: bacteria eaters) are viruses that selectively affect bacteria: each type of bacteriophage is active only against a certain type of bacteria and is neutral against other types. Bacteriophages that destroy pathogenic bacteria without disturbing the human normal flora are used in clinical practice. Therefore, they can be applied for all categories of patients as an effective and safe antibacterial agent for prevention and therapy, as well as in combination with antibiotics. Prophylactic use of bacteriophages is especially relevant when clinical signs of bacterial infection are absent, but it is undesirable to use antibiotics due to their side effects. As a result of using bacteriophages, the total number of pathogenic bacteria decreases, and the normal microbiota balance is maintained.
