Psychobiotic BSP-4 is a probiotic with antidepressant-like effects. It acts on the nervous system through the gut-brain axis. It helps normalize stress hormone levels, improves psychoemotional stability, and reduces anxiety.

BSP-4 is a unique psychobiotic that improves the symptoms of major depressive disorder and the overall health of the central nervous system.

Psychobiotics are live microorganisms that, when taken orally in adequate amounts, promote mental health.
The antidepressant-like effects of psychobiotics have been widely described in animal studies and are increasingly being confirmed in humans when used as adjuvant psychotropic medications.

The probiotic BSP-4 contains three species of bacteria: Bifidobacterium breve, Clostridium butyricum, and Pediococcus acidilactici.

The Bifidobacterium breve bacterial strain reduces levels of 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA), 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), and cortisol, and alters tryptophan metabolism in the intestinal microbiome. Thus, it has a positive effect on the entire central nervous system. It improves symptoms in major depressive disorder and promotes nervous system recovery in neuropsychiatric disorders.
Bifidobacterium breve also modulate the intestinal microbiome: it increases the overall bifidobacteria count and reduces the count of opportunistic and pathogenic members of the genus Desulfovibrio.

Clostridium butyricum is the safest clostridia of the entire genus. It is a core microbiome, produces large amounts of butyrate, and promotes healthy energy production in mucosal epithelial cells (colonocytes). Clostridium butyricum regulates various electrolyte transport systems and colonic motility. It reduces the symptoms of antibiotic-associated diarrhea and prevents pseudomembranous colitis.
By producing anti-inflammatory cytokines and inducing tolerogenic dendritic cells, Clostridium butyricum regulates epithelial inflammation and antigen tolerance.

It has a positive effect on the intestinal microbiome:

It increases the populations of Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli;
It reduces the populations of Ruminococci and opportunistic members of its genus, Clostridium spp.;
It inhibits the growth of highly pathogenic Clostridium difficile.

The Pediococcus acidilactici bacterial strain included in BSP-4 is acidophilic and highly resistant to acidic conditions. Through the production of lactic acid and the secretion of bacteriocins (pediocins), it exhibits antagonistic activity against opportunistic and pathogenic microorganisms, including the OCI group. It is highly active against gram-positive pathogenic Listeria monocytogenes. The antibacterial activity of pediocins is mediated by the formation of pores in the cytoplasmic membrane of target cells via a specific receptor, the mannose phosphotransferase system (man-PTS).

Pediococcus acidilactici uses:
significantly reduces stress-induced anxiety;
mitigates hyperactivity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis;
reverses abnormal expression of phosphorylated CREB protein in the hippocampus and c-Fos protein.

Pediococcus acidilactici also has powerful anti-inflammatory properties: it reduces levels of the pro-inflammatory cytokines tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6), and increases levels of the anti-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-alpha-10 (IL-10).

The psychobiotic BSP-4 can be recommended for various mental disorders, depressive disorders, and for improving the overall health of the nervous system.
