Polyprenols are a natural anti-inflammatory and antiviral agent. The anti-inflammatory effect is achieved by inhibiting the LOX-5 enzyme (5-lipoxygenase). LOX-5 is similar to the COX-2 enzyme, the suppression of which is the basis of the action of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. But unlike COX-2, the LOX-5 enzyme is expressed only in immune cells, and not in all organs and tissues, which eliminates the gastrointestinal side effects typical of NSAIDs and the resulting need to take antiulcer drugs, an increased risk of heart attacks and strokes, and other undesirable effects.
